The reason is because you can download Mugen from any of the other mugen fan sites but if you do not know how to setup the character list, then you will only be playing with the kung fu character that comes with Mugen. We have a Mugen starter game setup and ready to play with Spiderman, Venom, Carnage, and Doctor Octopus. The file size is only 12 MB big so it is easy for anyone to download. You can start to learn how to "Mugen" here by downloading additional characters such as Apocalypse and Sandman. Once you figure out how to add characters and name the folders correctly, you can graduate past pcvideogamespot and start to explore the vast world of Mugen where you can download thousands of new characters from Marvel, Dc comics, Capcom and more. The engine was originally released July 17, 1999. Beta versions of it were made to work on DOS, Linux and Windows platforms, distributed through their website. The engine allows users to insert created characters, background stages, and other game objects through interpreted text files, graphics, and sound compilations to create a functioning fighting game similar to commercial games. While the engine is set up primarily for fighting game development, several other game types have been developed using it, including shooter and platform style games. Officially, Elecbyte claims to have forgotten what the acronym M.U.G.E.N stood for, but the readme documentation states that its meaning referred to the days when the engine was meant to emulate shooting games as opposed to fighting games.
READ ME. To Those who are new to mugen and have no clue how to get this program to work, You can download the mugen starter pack HERE. After you download it, unzip the mugen_starter_pack.zip file and then open up the folder called Win Mugen. When you get in the folder, just look for the Winmugen.exe file and double click it. You should end up with a fullscreen MUGEN title with some options and 4 characters to choose from (Spiderman, Carnage, Venom, and Doctor Octopus). More characters can be found below. To add them, you have to find the file called select.def and add their name below the list of names already in the file. So if you want to add Juggernaut, then download Juggernaut, unzip his character file into the "char" folder under your main winmugen folder and then open up the select.def file (which should be in the data folder in winmugen) and type Juggernaut underneath of Spiderman's name or somewhere in the list (you can type Juggernaut under Venom or whoever is in your list).
Slightly modified, but using the same basic Mugen screenpack, here is Mugen starter pack 2. The character slots have been increased to hold more characters than 8 and a few more characters have been added. If you would simply like to modify the first mugen starter pack without overwriting your select.def file, just copy and paste the system.def file into the data folder in your Mugen folder. The system.def file is what contains the ruleset for the number of character slots. The file size is also a bit larger then the first Mugen Starter pack at 27 megabytes, so the download time will be a little more then twice as long. If you like Mugen and are ready to progress past the Mugen Starter pack, then DOWNLOAD MUGEN STARTER PACK 2 HERE. Here is another version of Mugen that is being added. It features the Marvel VS DC Screenpack and includes one new stage called "Welcome to Latveria" featuring Dr. Doom in the background with his servants. If you are tired of the same old boring stages and have had no luck adding them, then try this mugen starter pack. The characters included in mugen starter pack 3 are: Spiderman, Venom, Doc Oc, Carnage, Black Cat, Shuma Gorath, Mr. Fantastic, Savage Hulk, Juggernaut, Sandman, and Cyborg Superman. The download size is a bit larger coming in at 64.7 MB because of some larger character def files, so dial up users or slow internet connections may take awhile longer. There are 55 character slots including 5 boss slots in this screenpack, so you have more room to add characters. The game is set up and ready to play, and ready to have more characters added to it. The other mugen starter packs are quick downloads to give you an idea of what the game is. As you "grow into" mugen, you will want to add more stages, more characters, and music to make it your own custom arcade fighting game. These versions of Mugen starter packs have been kept basic to reduce huge download file sizes, but are ready to play right after you download them and are ready for more mugen add ons. We have tried to make Mugen as easy as possible to download and play so that you would not have to add characters and be forced to learn how to code Mugen without being able to experience the game first.
July 25, 2009 - Update for mugen_starter_pack_3.zip - Moved the mp3 music file into the sound folder so that there is the appropriate stage music for Welcome to Latveria. You can always add your own mp3 files to the sound folder and configure Mugen to play them at the desired stage. So in essence you could listen to your favorite rock music while playing Mugen or what you like to listen to. Remember, in order to add a new music mp3 file to a stage, you must first put the mp3 file you want to play in the sound folder which is located in the main Win Mugen folder. In most cases the folder should be the 6th folder down right below plugins. Next after you have put the mp3 file in the sound folder, you will want to put the specific mp3 music file you want in a particular stage. To do this, go to the stages folder and open the .def file of the stage you are going to add the mp3 file to. So if the stage you want to add music to is WelcomeToLatveria, then find the WelcomeToLatveria.def file in stages folder and edit it. You can open it up in Wordpad or notepad or your favorite text editor. Now once you have that .def file open, scroll down in the list until you see something that says: bgmusic = . Put the name of your mp3 file right after the = part of bgmusic. So if the mp3 file you want to add is called rock_and_roll.mp3 then you will want it to look like this when you are done: bgmusic = rock_and_roll.mp3 . And thats all there is to it. Now, save the changes you made to the file by clicking File and save. Restart Mugen and test out your new music. You should hear the mp3 you want designated for that particular stage.
You can learn how to add a new Mugen character below. Please note the part about renaming folders after you unzip the character file to get the character to work. The folder name has to be the same as the character .def file!
UPDATE: There are some people having problems adding new characters and getting them to work. As you learned above, the character name you type in has to be the same as the .def file. So if you see the def file for sandman is sandman.def , then you need to type sandman in the character list. However, if the sandman.def file is in a folder named Sandman_ver_2._0 you need to rename the folder so it is the same as the .def file. So rename the folder to sandman and the character should work.
Update: Here is another version of Mugen called MK Mugen project, or Mortal Kombat Mugen project. It is basically a remake of Mortal Kombat 3 the last 2d Mortal Kombat fighting game. It can be considered stand alone since the MK characters totally waste normal Mugen comic characters (they are just stronger?). You can download Mortal Kombat mugen BY CLICKING HERE
If you would like to add the Fantastic 4 to Mugen, then you can get the 4 of them together BY CLICKING HERE. The file is about 44 MB. You will have to extract each individual Fantastic 4 member to add them in your character folder. You may have to change the name of the folder according to the .def file inside as well. You can read more about adding a new character to Mugen on this page.
Here is another small tutorial to add stages to Mugen. First, download the stage that you want to add to Mugen. There will be 2 files inside of the stage file you downloaded. After you extract the 2 stage files formo the main stage file you downloaded, put the 2 files inside of the states folder in your main winmugen folder. Now, go to the data folder and find the file named select.def. Open and edit this file and find where it says Extra Stages down in the list. Add the stage name right under the Extrastages line. So if you downloaded the stage called WelcomeToLatveria, you will type in: WelcomeToLatveria.def . It is important for you to remember to add the .def extension after the stage name so that Mugen will recognize which file to use.

The latest update for mugen is here! This huge .zip file contains 107 characters including characters from mortal combat,street fighter,xmen,justice league,king of fighters,killer instinct and more! If you are an old fan of Street Fighter 2 or Street Fighter 3, then MUGEN is not something you want to miss. This game has those old street fighter characters in it and versions of them you have never seen before. Take Boss Sagat for example. He is pretty much Sagat taken from Street Fighter Alpha (?) and modified with a bunch of other special moves and effects. This game is glorious compared to MARVEL VS Capcom , Street Fighter Series, and other 2d fighting games - IT HAS ALL OF THE CHARACTERS PUT TOGETHER. If you have never played it before you will be shocked to find out there are character selection screens with over 200+ characters to select from including examples like Evil Ryu, Evil Ken, Master Ryu, Master Akuma, Evil Akuma, Holy Ken, All of the spiderman characters, X-Men - if they have been in a 2d fighter game before they are are most likely all available for MUGEN. That is what makes this game so AWESOME. Not to mention you can customize the characters or even make your own. Add your own music and everything. Mugen goes beyond some simple emulator that lets you play MAME versions of SFA or SF3. MUGEN will replace your emulator for snes or mame or gens for your favorite 2d game suck as the ones mentioned previously because it combines all of those characters from ALL the games into one sweet azz video game. Best thing of all is it is free to download and play and own. You cant beat that and we have downloads on our site to get you started. This might sound too good to be true for some people that are just finding out about MUGEN, so to those of you who are new to MUGEN, you just got real lucky finding one of the sweetest freeware 2d fighting games in the world. Another cool thing about MUGEN is you can add your own music to the stages and characters you put in your select list. You can use your own mp3 music and set it for a particular stage. You have probably seen this on youtube mugen videos and it is relatively easy to do with a little instruction reading. Character stats can also be altered, so that you could for example make Ryu's Haduken 100 times the size it is to fill up half of the screen when it flies to hit Ryu's opponent so it never misses. They could still block the haduken and you could even make it a bit more fair such as reducing the damage of the haduken so you would have a much bigger haduken hitting most of the time for less damage. Mugen is totally configurable to do these types of customizations. That is what brings new life back into the old Street Fighter games and SNK CAPCOM X-men and other 2D fighting games we all grew up with.

Some Mugen characters are not balanced and you should be aware of this as they can become game killer characters. Take for instance, Evil Akuma who is obviously overpowered and can basically wipe out any other character in seconds except for maybe the other overpowered Mugen characters like Dark Phoenix? You can change their statistics in the character def file or in the cns file if the information you need to change is not in the def file. This is what you will eventually want to get into doing to make the game well balanced to your taste. This is a great way to get into Mugen projects and get introduced into the Mugen world to become an author.
